Reading, Not Swiping

We live in an age of instant gratification. Smartphones have put the world at our fingertips, but this constant connectivity comes with a cost. The addictive nature of swiping through endless streams of content, whether on social media or elsewhere, is rewiring our brains. We are losing our ability to focus, to concentrate, and to engage with anything that requires sustained attention. This is especially concerning when it comes to engaging with the Word of God.

The Bible is not meant to be swiped through. It’s not a collection of bite-sized, easily digestible snippets. It’s a rich, complex, and interconnected narrative that demands our full attention and engagement. We are called to read the Word, to meditate on it, to study it, and to allow it to transform us. This requires a level of focus and concentration that is increasingly difficult to cultivate in our swipe-obsessed culture.

The consequences of this “swiping culture” are significant. When we approach the Bible with a swiping mentality, we risk:

Even the elderly are not immune. Many find themselves caught up in the endless scroll of TikTok or other social media feeds, their brains re-wiring for instant gratification. This is a sobering reminder that this is not just a “young person’s problem.” It’s a cultural problem that affects us all.

So, what can we do? How can we cultivate the focus and concentration necessary to truly engage with the Word of God? Here are a few suggestions:

In a world that is constantly vying for our attention, we must be intentional about cultivating a spirit of focus and reflection. We must resist the allure of the swipe and embrace the discipline of reading, meditation, and prayer. For it is in the quiet moments of reflection that we truly encounter the living God and allow His Word to transform our lives.
